Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Inspect camshaft and cylinder head for damage. Measure bearing journals. Replace camshaft if not within specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article.
  2. Measure camshaft lobe on outer edges and in rocker contact surface areas. Replace camshaft if difference between both readings exceeds .010" (.25 mm). Ensure proper sized camshaft is used when replacing.
NOTE: If an oversized camshaft is used, cylinder head must have oversized camshaft bores also. Oversized camshafts are identified by Green painted barrel with letters "O/JS" stamped on air pump end of camshaft. An oversized cylinder head is identified by Green painted bearing caps with letters "O/JS" stamped to rear of oil gallery plug on air pump end of cylinder head.
