Removal & Installation (Gears & Shafts)

  1. Remove oil pan and oil pick-up. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using Crankshaft Sprocket Puller/Installer (C-4685) and puller insert, remove crankshaft sprocket. See Figure. Remove crankshaft oil seal retainer.
  3. Remove balance shaft chain cover, chain guide and chain tensioner. See Figure. Remove balance shaft chain sprocket retaining bolts and crankshaft chain sprocket Torx bolts. Remove chain and sprocket assembly. Remove front gear cover retaining stud.
  4. Remove cover and balance shaft gears. Remove carrier rear cover and remove balance shafts from carrier.
  5. To install balance shafts and gears, reverse removal procedure. Use ALIGNING BALANCE SHAFTS procedure under in this article to ensure correct timing of balance shafts and crankshaft.
