Installation (Colt Wagon 1.8L)
- Rotate tensioner toward water pump and temporarily tighten retaining nut. Ensure camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are aligned. See Figure. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket.
- Apply pressure on tension side of belt while installing belt on oil pump sprocket. Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket. Apply force on camshaft sprocket, in counterclockwise direction, to apply tension on tension side of belt. Ensure all timing marks are aligned.
- Loosen belt tensioner bolt, then loosen nut to place tension on timing belt. Rotate camshaft sprocket clockwise until timing mark is offset by 2 teeth to apply tension on belt. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. Tighten tensioner nut, then tighten bolt.
- Check belt tension by applying slight thumb pressure to timing belt in direction of timing belt lower rear cover. See Figure. Ensure distance between back of timing belt (smooth side) and timing belt lower rear cover is approximately .23" (6 mm). To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.
