Removal (Colt & Colt Wagon 1.5L)

  1. To release fuel pressure, disconnect fuel pump connector. Fuel pump connector is located near fuel tank on Colt Wagon models or under rear seat cushion on Colt models.
  2. With fuel pump connector disconnected, start engine and allow to idle until it stops. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery terminal and reconnect fuel pump connector. Drain cooling system.
  3. On Colt Wagon models, remove left-hand under cover. Support engine and remove engine mount bolts near timing belt cover.
  4. On all models, disconnect upper radiator hose, by-pass hose and heater hoses. Remove spark plugs.

  5. Disconnect air intake and breather hoses, accelerator cable and throttle control cable (A/T models). Disconnect fuel and vacuum lines. Disconnect necessary electrical connections.
  6. Remove rocker cover and upper timing belt cover. Rotate engine clockwise to align timing marks. See Figure.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  rotate engine counterclockwise.
  7. Secure timing belt on camshaft sprocket with wire. Remove camshaft sprocket with timing belt installed and place sprocket and belt on lower timing belt cover.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  allow timing belt to come off of crankshaft sprocket or rotate engine with timing belt removed from camshaft. It may be necessary to remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT under CAMSHAFT in this article.
  8. Remove support brace from intake manifold (if equipped). Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Using Wrench (TW-10B), loosen head bolts in proper sequence using 2 steps. See Fig 1. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
