Rear Axle Hub Bearing: Installation

  1. Install bearing outer races, using installers (MB990926 and MB990928) and driver (MB990938). Use press-fitting force of 4,400 lbs. (2,000 kg) or more. If less force is required, replace entire drum assembly.
  2. Install inside bearing inner race. Press new oil seal into end of drum, using installer (MB990926) and driver (MB990938). Apply grease to bearings, oil seal lip and bearing surface of brake drum. Install outside bearing inner race. Mount brake drum and check bearing play.
  3. If play exists, remove hub cap, cotter pin and lock cap. Loosen nut. Adjust bearing by tightening to 14 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Loosen completely, and retighten to 4 ft. lbs. (5 N.m). Install lock cap and cotter pin. Operate parking brake lever to adjust shoe clearance.
