Valve Guide Servicing

  1. Ensure valve stem is to specifications and check valve stem clearance. If clearance exceeds service limits as listed in table, replace valve guide with next oversize.

  2. Heat cylinder head to approximately 480°F (249°C), then use a valve guide tool to drive out each guide toward the combustion chamber. After head has cooled, ream guide bore in cylinder head to specified size.
  3. To install new guides, reheat head to same temperature, quickly insert and drive guides into head.
  4. Guide should protrude above head surface.579-.602" (14.7-15.3 mm) on 1.4L engines;.539-.563" (13.7-14.3 mm) on 1.6L engines when properly installed. Check guide I.D. and ream as necessary.
