Removal (1.6L)

  1. Drain cooling system and disconnect upper radiator hose. Remove breather and purge hoses. Remove air cleaner and fuel line. Remove vacuum hose at distributor and purge control valve.
  2. Detach spark wires and remove distributor. Disconnect heater hose intake manifold and water hose between cylinder head and carburetor. Disconnect water gauge wire and remove fuel pump.
  3. Remove exhaust manifold. Remove intake manifold and carburetor as an assembly. Remove timing belt upper front cover. Turn crankshaft so number 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke.
  4. Mark timing belt with marker in line with camshaft sprocket timing mark. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and remove camshaft sprocket with timing belt attached. Position on sprocket holder.
  5. If there is a large gap present between camshaft sprocket and sprocket holder, insert a 2" (50 mm) piece of timing belt or similar material into the gap to prevent belt from disengaging from crankshaft or oil pump sprockets.
  6. Loosen cylinder head bolts, in steps, in reverse of tightening sequence. See Figure. Remove bolts and lift cylinder head from engine being careful not to twist sprocket and belt.
