Pinion Setting (With Tool C-758-D4)
- With main tool left in rear axle housing after installing pinion bearing cups, loosen tool nut and tighten to produce 10-30 INCH lbs. turning torque, then install gauge block (SP-528) on main tool; tighten screw securely. Place cross bore arbor SP-5183 (9 3/4" axle), SP-5185 (9 1/4" axle) in axle housing bearing seats.
- Center arbor, then insert bearing caps and insert bolts and tighten to 10 ft. lbs. Use a feeler gauge between arbor and gauge block to determine thickness of shims to install between rear pinion bearing cup and carrier casting.
-
NOTE: To select correct thickness of shims, read number on pinion gear face (0, -1, +1, etc.).
Feeler gauge indicates correct shim thickness for "O" pinion; if pinion is marked "O", shim pack should be.001" THICKER than feeler gauge measurement; if pinion is marked "+1", shim pack should be.001" THINNER than feeler gauge measurement. Pinions with other markings are handled in a similar manner.
