Test Q: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On
- If engine cooling system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine cooling system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform engine cooling system diagnostic system check. See ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Observe low engine coolant indicator. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If low engine coolant indicator illuminates, go to next step. If low engine coolant indicator does not illuminate, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect coolant level module 2-pin harness connector. Coolant level module is located on right rear of radiator. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between coolant level 2-pin harness connector Black wire terminal and Yellow/Black wire terminal. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, select IPC INPUTS menu. If scan tool indicates that low engine coolant indicator is on, go to next step. If scan tool indicates that low engine coolant indicator is off, go to step 7 .
- Test Black wire between coolant level module 2-pin harness connector and ground point for an open or high resistance. Ground point is located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Test Yellow/Black wire between coolant level module 2-pin harness connector and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector terminal B4 for an open, high resistance or short to voltage. See Figure . If problem is not found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step . 10
- Check for poor connections at IPC connector. If poor connections are not found, go to step 8 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Check for poor connections at coolant level module connector. If poor connections are not found, go to step 9 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Replace coolant level module. See COOLANT LEVEL INDICATOR MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step 2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.

Coolant level module may also be referred to as coolant level sensor or coolant level switch.
