Test Ac: Service Engine Soon Light Inoperative

NOTE: SERVICE ENGINE SOON light may also be referred to as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
  1. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform powertrain control system diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Check CLUSTER fuse in instrument panel fuse block. See Figure . If fuse is not blown, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  10 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in front left corner of engine compartment, inside air cleaner. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and PCM Natural harness connector C2 terminal No. 5. See Figure . Observe MIL. If MIL is not illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is illuminated, go to step  9 .
  4. Check fuse in jumper wire. If fuse is not blown, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  11 .
  5. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector terminal B1 and Powertrain Control Module Natural harness connector C2 terminal No. 5 for an open. See Figure and Figure . If an open is not found, go to next step. If an open is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  6. Connect a test light between ground and IPC harness connector terminal A12 (Orange wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  8 .
  7. Repair open in Orange wire between instrument panel fuse block and IPC. After repair, go to step  14 .
  8. Check for poor connections at IPC. If poor connections are not found, go to step  12 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  9. Check for poor connections at PCM. If poor connections are not found, go to step  13 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  10. Repair short to ground in Orange wire between instrument panel fuse block and IPC. After repair, go to step  14 .
  11. Repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire between IPC and PCM. After repair, go to step  14 .
  12. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  14 .
  13. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  14. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
