Test Ab: Service Engine Soon Light Always On

NOTE: SERVICE ENGINE SOON light may also be referred to as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
  1. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If powertrain control system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform powertrain control system diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in front left corner of engine compartment, inside air cleaner. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe MIL. If MIL is illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is not illuminated, go to step  5 .
  3. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Test Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector terminal B1 and Powertrain Control Module Natural harness connector C2 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure for short to ground. If short to ground is not found, go to next step. If short to ground is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  6 .
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  6 .
  5. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  6. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
