Test W: Odometer/Trip Reset Switch Inoperative
NOTE:
Odometer/trip reset switch may also be referred to as trip odometer reset switch.
- If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If IPC system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform IPC system diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool observe TRIP RESET SW in IPC DATA LISTS. If scan tool displays OFF, go to next step. If scan tool does not display OFF, go to step 6 .
- Press TRIP/RESET switch. Using scan tool observe TRIP RESET SW in IPC DATA LISTS. If scan tool displays ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ON, go to step 5 .
- Press TRIP/ODO switch. If display does not switch from odometer to trip, go to step 7 . If display switches from odometer to trip, go to DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect odometer/trip reset switch harness connector. Connect a fused 3-amp jumper wire between ground and odometer/trip reset switch harness connector Light Green wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool observe TRIP RESET SW in IPC DATA LISTS. If scan tool does not display ON, go to step 8 . If scan tool displays ON, go to step 11 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect odometer/trip reset switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool observe TRIP RESET SW in IPC data lists. If scan tool does not display OFF, go to step 9 . If scan tool displays OFF, go to step 12 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect odometer/trip reset switch harness connector. Connect a fused 3-amp jumper wire between ground and odometer/trip reset switch harness connector Dark Green/White wire terminal. If odometer does not switch from odometer to trip when ground is applied and removed, go to step 10 . If odometer switches from odometer to trip when ground is applied and removed, go to step 12 .
- Test Light Green wire between odometer/trip reset switch and IPC harness connector terminal B9 for an open, high resistance or short to voltage. See Figure . If an open, high resistance or short to voltage is not found, go to step 13 . If an open, high resistance or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Test Light Green wire between odometer/trip reset switch and IPC harness connector terminal B9 for short to ground. See Figure . If short to ground is not found, go to step 13 . If short to ground is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Test Dark Green/White wire between odometer/trip reset switch and IPC harness connector terminal A11 for an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage. See Figure . If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is not found, go to step 13 . If an open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Test Black wire between odometer/trip reset switch harness connector and ground point for an open or high resistance. Ground point is located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. See appropriate GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step. If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Check for poor connections at odometer/trip reset switch. If poor connections are not found, go to step 14 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Check for poor connections at IPC. If poor connections are not found, go to step 15 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Replace odometer/ trip reset switch. After repair, go to step 16 .
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step 2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
