Lighting System Diagnostic System Check

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see TEST G: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Try to establish scan tool communication with Body Control Module (BCM). If communication with BCM is established, go to next step. If communication with BCM is not established, go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
    3. CAUTION: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon as crank power mode is observed.
  3. Using scan tool, select CLASS 2 POWER MODE in DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK. Rotate ignition switch through all positions while observing IGNITION SWITCH POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, go to TEST B: POWER MODE MISMATCH in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  4. Select DISPLAY DTC function for BCM. Record all displayed DTCs and status of displayed DTCs. If any DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If no DTCs are displayed, attempt to diagnose system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  6. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, repair instrument cluster by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, perform DTC B1000: CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION test in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
