DTC P0463: Fuel Level Signal High: Testing
- If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If IPC system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform IPC system diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe FUEL TANK LEVEL REMAINING parameter in PCM EVAP data list. If scan tool displays more than 187 percent, go to next step. If scan tool does not display more than 187 percent, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect fuel sensor harness connector through access panel in trunk. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between fuel sensor harness connector Black wire and Purple wire terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe FUEL TANK LEVEL REMAINING parameter in PCM EVAP data list. If scan tool does not display less than 4 percent, go to next step. If scan tool displays less than 4 percent, go to step 6 .
- Test Purple wire between fuel sensor harness connector and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Natural harness connector C2 terminal No. 69 for an open or high resistance. See Figure . PCM is located in front left corner of engine compartment, inside air cleaner. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to step 7 . If an open or high resistance is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Test Black wire between fuel sensor harness connector and PCM Natural harness connector C1 terminals No. 28 and 29, and PCM Natural harness connector C2 terminal No. 35 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If open, high resistance or short to voltage is not found, go to step 7 . If open, high resistance or short to voltage is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10
- Check for poor connections at fuel level sensor harness connector. If poor connections are not found, go to step 8 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Check for poor connections at PCM harness connectors. If poor connections are not found, go to step 9 . If poor connections are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Replace fuel level sensor. See FUEL PUMP under FUEL SYSTEMS in appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repair, go to step 10 .
- Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connectors. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within CODE ENABLE CRITERIA conditions. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC resets as current, go to step 2 . If DTC does not reset as current, system is okay.
NOTE:
Fuel level sensor is an integral part of fuel pump assembly.
