Removal (2001 Monte Carlo & Century, Regal - 3.8L)

NOTE: Power brake booster can be removed without completely removing master cylinder (without disconnecting pipes), but if both components are to be removed, remove master cylinder first.
  1. Remove left instrument panel insulator retainers, using Door Trim Pad Clip Remover (J 38778) to remove clips. Disconnect courtesy lamp from IP insulator. Remove IP insulator from stud at accelerator pedal, and remove IP insulator. Disconnect electrical connector from brakelight switch. Remove retaining clip, and disconnect brake booster pushrod from brake pedal.
  2. Remove cross vehicle brace. Remove fuel injector sight shield. Remove electrical connector from brake fluid level sensor. Remove master cylinder retaining nuts, and carefully position master cylinder aside (with lines attached). Disconnect check valve from brake booster. Position aside vacuum hose and check valve as assembly.
  3. Disconnect throttle and cruise control cable from throttle body. Remove throttle bracket, throttle cable, and cruise control cable from throttle body, and position them aside as assembly. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor electrical connector. Remove air inlet duct from throttle body.
  4. Apply parking brake, and place transaxle in Neutral. Remove engine mount strut bolts, and swing struts aside. Remove brackets if necessary. Install Engine Tilt Strap (J 41131), and rotate engine forward. Release parking brake.
  5. Remove EGR valve wiring harness heat shield. Disconnect electrical connector from EGR valve. Remove EGR valve, and discard gasket.
  6. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect 3-way catalytic converter pipe: disconnect heated O2 sensor wiring harness connector and retainers. Support exhaust system, remove 3-way catalytic converter pipe, and discard gaskets. Remove heated O2 sensor using Oxygen Sensor Wrench (J 39194). Remove transaxle fluid filler tube bracket retainer, and position filler tube aside.
  7. Attach Power Brake Booster Holder (J 22805-B) to booster using master cylinder retaining nuts. See Figure. Unlock booster tab from cowl mounting flange using flat-bladed tool, while turning booster counterclockwise with ratchet on holder. Remove booster.
