Removal (2001 Grand Prix - 3.1L & Century, Regal, & 2001 Monte Carlo - 3.4L)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove left instrument panel insulator retainers, using Door Trim Pad Clip Remover (J 38778) to remove clips. Disconnect courtesy lamp from IP insulator. Remove IP insulator from stud at accelerator pedal, and remove IP insulator. Disconnect electrical connector from brakelight switch. Remove retaining clip, and disconnect brake booster pushrod from brake pedal.
  2. Partially drain cooling system. On Monte Carlo and Century, Regal, remove cross vehicle brace. For all models, remove air cleaner intake duct, disconnecting IAT sensor electrical connector and removing intake air duct/MAF sensor from air cleaner assembly and throttle body. Relieve fuel system pressure. See proper FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF procedure in ENGINES. Disconnect EVAP canister purge valve pipe, fuel feed pipe and return pipe, and position aside. For Monte Carlo and Century, Regal model, go to step  4.
  3. For Grand Prix, lower vehicle. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Disconnect brake control module electrical connector. Disconnect wheel cylinder brake pipes and master cylinder brake pipes from brake pressure modulator valve. Plug pipes to avoid fluid loss and contamination. Remove BPMV and ECBM, as assembly, from bracket.
  4. Disconnect coolant outlet and inlet bypass hoses, and position aside. Remove heater inlet pipe. Apply parking brake, and place transaxle in Neutral. Remove engine mount strut bolts, and swing struts aside. Remove brackets if necessary. Install Engine Tilt Strap (J 41131), and rotate engine forward. Release parking brake.
  5. Remove electrical connector from brake fluid level sensor. Remove master cylinder retaining nuts, and carefully position master cylinder aside (with lines attached). Disconnect check valve from brake booster. Position aside vacuum hose and check valve as assembly.
  6. Attach Power Brake Booster Holder (J 22805-B) to booster using master cylinder retaining nuts. See Figure. Unlock booster from cowl. Unlock booster tab from cowl mounting flange using flat-blade screwdriver, while turning booster counterclockwise with ratchet on holder. Remove booster.
