Caliper Parking Brake

  1. Apply and fully release parking brake 6 times. Verify that parking brake pedal releases completely. Turn ignition on, and verify brake indicator light is off. If brake indicator light is on, ensure parking brake pedal is in release mode and fully returned to stop. Remove slack in front parking brake cable by pulling downward on cable.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel assemblies. Remove calipers from brackets, and wire aside. Remove brake pads and caliper brackets. Relieve tension on park brake system at park brake equalizer. Remove rear brake rotors.
  3. Position Drum-To-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge (J 21177-A) inside of park brake drum at widest point. Tighten gauge screw to retain gauge at this measurement. Position gauge over park brake shoe at widest point. Turn actuator adjuster until park brake shoe just contacts gauge. Repeat procedure for other drum brake.
  4. Install rotors, brake pads, caliper brackets and wheel assemblies. Replace caliper bracket fasteners, and clean rust and corrosion from wheel hub surface. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust parking brake by turning nut at equalizer while spinning both rear wheels. When either rear wheel starts to drag, back off nut one full turn.
  5. Lower vehicle to curb height. Apply parking brake, then inspect for rotation of rear wheels. If wheels rotate, readjust parking brake shoes. Release parking brake. Verify wheels rotate freely.
