Manual Bleeding (Non-Abs)

  1. Deplete vacuum reserve from power brake booster by depressing brake pedal several times with engine off. Fill master cylinder and keep at maximum fill level during bleeding procedure. If master cylinder is known or suspected to have air in it, go to next step. If master cylinder does not have air in it, go to step  4.
  2. Disconnect forward brakeline from master cylinder. Allow master cylinder bore to fill with fluid until it begins to flow from fitting. Connect brakeline to master cylinder and tighten fitting. Have an assistant depress brake pedal slowly one time and hold. Loosen forward brakeline fitting to release air from bore. Tighten fitting while pedal is still at floor. Release brake pedal slowly. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. NOTE: Individual wheel cylinders/calipers can be bled only after all air is removed from master cylinder.
  3. Repeat step  2 until fluid is clear and free of air bubbles. Repeat procedure at rearward brakeline fitting on master cylinder. Master cylinder is now bled. If it is known that the wheel cylinders/calipers do not have air in them, it is not necessary to bleed them.
  4. Ensure master cylinder is at least half full during following procedure. If wheel cylinders/calipers are known or suspected to have air in them, raise and support vehicle. Remove bleeder valve cap from first bleeder valve to be serviced. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table. Place wrench over bleeder valve. Attach clear vinyl bleeder hose onto bleeder valve. Submerge other end into a transparent container partially filled with clean brake fluid.
  5. Slowly depress brake pedal one time through its full travel and hold. Open bleeder valve to purge air. Close bleeder valve and slowly release pedal. Wait 15 seconds. Repeat procedure, using slow full strokes when pumping pedal, until fluid is clear and free of air bubbles. Proceed to next wheel position and repeat procedure.
  6. Ensure brake pedal feels firm and constant, not spongy. If pedal travel is not excessive, start engine. Check brake pedal again for firmness. If brake pedal is okay, road test vehicle, performing several normal stops from moderate speeds. If brake pedal is not okay, repeat bleeding procedure until all air is bled from system.
