Test R: No Communication With EBCM/EBTCM (Cutlass & MALIBU)

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Verify scan tool is correctly connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool is correctly connected to DLC, go to next step. If scan tool is not correctly connected to DLC, go to step  13.
  3. NOTE: ICC BATT fuse may be referred to as ABS BATT fuse.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect ICC BATT (10-amp) fuse, located in underhood fuse/relay center. If fuse is blown, go to step  11. If fuse is not blown, go to next step.
  5. NOTE: ICC IGN fuse may be referred to as ABS IGN fuse.
  6. Reinstall ICC BATT fuse. Remove and inspect ICC IGN (10-amp) fuse, located in underhood fuse/relay center. If fuse is blown, go to step  12. If fuse is not blown, go to next step.
  7. Reinstall ICC IGN fuse. Disconnect EBCM connectors. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EBCM connector C1 terminal "D" (Black wire) and ground. Resistance should be 0-2 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  18.
  8. Using DVOM, measure voltage between EBCM connector terminal No. 13 (Orange wire) and ground. If voltage is 10 volts or greater, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step  19.
  9. Ensure ignition switch is in ON position, with engine off. Using DVOM, measure voltage between EBCM connector terminal No. 4 (Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is 10 volts or greater, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step  20.
  10. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Purple wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 12 and Body Control Module (BCM) terminal "B2". Resistance should be 0-2 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  21.
  11. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EBCM connector terminal No. 12 (Purple wire) and ground. Resistance should be infinite (OL). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  22.
  12. Check EBCM connectors and terminals for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors and terminals are faulty, go to step  23. If connectors and terminals are okay, go to step  24.
  13. Disconnect EBCM connector. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EBCM connector C2 terminal No. 13 (Orange wire) and ground. Resistance should be infinite (OL). If resistance is as specified, go to step  14. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  15.
  14. Disconnect EBCM connector. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between EBCM connector terminal No. 4 (Pink wire) and ground. Resistance should be infinite (OL). If resistance is as specified, go to step  16. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  17.
  15. Disconnect and reconnect the scan tool in order to ensure a good connection exists. After a good scan tool connection is verified, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  16. NOTE: ICC BATT fuse may be referred to as ABS BATT fuse.
  17. Replace ICC BATT fuse. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  18. Repair short to ground in Orange wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 13 and underhood fuse/relay center. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  19. NOTE: ICC IGN fuse may be referred to as ABS IGN fuse.
  20. Replace ICC IGN fuse. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  21. NOTE: fuse may be referred to as fuse.
  22. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 4 and ICC IGN fuse. Replace ICC IGN fuse. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  23. Repair open or high resistance in Black wire between EBCM connector terminal "D" and ground. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  24. Repair open or high resistance in Orange wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 13 and underhood fuse/relay center. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  25. Repair open or high resistance in Pink wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 4 and underhood fuse/relay center. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  26. Repair open or high resistance in Purple wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 12 and Body Control Module (BCM) terminal "B2". After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  27. Repair short to ground in Purple wire between EBCM connector terminal No. 12 and Body Control Module (BCM) terminal "B2". After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  28. Repair or replace faulty terminals. After repair, reconnect all disconnected connectors and perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  29. Replace EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
