Test E: ETS Off Warning Indicator Always On (ACHIEVA, Cutlass, 1999 Cavalier & 1999 SUNFIRE)

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select POWERTRAIN. Enter vehicle information into scan tool. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO and then STORE INFO. If no PCM DTCS exist, go to next step. If any PCM DTCs are set or other failure records are present, diagnose and repair any stored PCM DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Using scan tool, select BODY menu. Using scan tool, select IPC, then LAMP TEST. Using scan tool, command warning indicators OFF. If warning indicators turn off, go to next step. If warning indicators remain illuminated, diagnose instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Disconnect ETS switch connector. If ETS OFF indicator turns off, go to step  7. If ETS OFF indicator remains illuminated, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect instrument panel harness connector C1. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ETS switch harness connector terminal "B" and ground. Resistance should be infinite (OL). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  8.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check instrument panel harness connector C1 and ETS switch harness connector for damage, poor terminal contact and terminal corrosion. If a problem is found, go to step  9. If a problem is not found, go to step  10.
  7. Replace ETS switch. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  8. Repair short to ground. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  9. Repair or replace connector terminals as necessary. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
  10. Replace EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
