DTC C1291: Open BRAKELIGHT Switch Circuit During Deceleration Or DTC C1292: Open BRAKELIGHT Switch Circuit When Abs Was Required
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1295 is set as current or history, go to DTC C1295. If DTC C1295 is not set as current or history, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DATA LIST, and then select BRAKE SWITCH POSITION. Apply light pressure to brake pedal while monitoring BRAKE SWITCH POSITION on scan tool. If scan tool indicates brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to step 22) . If scan tool does not indicate brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to next step.
- Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Observe rear brake lights. If rear brake lights are on, go to next step. If rear brake lights are not on, go to step 8) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using DVOM, measure voltage between brake switch input circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If voltage is equal to or greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 15) .
- Check EBCM/EBTCM connector and harness connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors are faulty, go to step 16) . If connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Reconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Test drive vehicle and perform an ABS stop from about 20 MPH. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1291 or C1292 is set as current, go to step 21) . If DTCs C1291 and C1292 are not set as current, go to step 22) .
- Using DVOM, measure voltage between brakelight switch power supply circuit of brakelight switch connector and ground. If voltage is equal to or greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 11) .
- Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using DVOM, measure voltage between brake switch input circuit of brakelight switch connector and ground. If voltage is equal to or greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If circuit voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 15) .
- Check for proper adjustment of brakelight switch. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article. If brakelight switch is properly adjusted, go to step 17) . If brakelight switch is not properly adjusted, go to step 18) .
- Remove brakelight switch fuse. See BRAKELIGHT SWITCH FUSE IDENTIFICATION table. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminals of brakelight switch fuse. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 13)
.BRAKELIGHT SWITCH FUSE IDENTIFICATION
Application Fuse "J" Body STOP HAZARD "N" Body Alero, Cutlass, 1999 Grand Am & Malibu STOPLAMP Achieva, 1998 Grand Am & Skylark STOP HAZARD "W" Body Century, Intrigue & Regal STOPLAMP Lumina & Monte Carlo No. 23 - Using DVOM, measure resistance of brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector. If circuit resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to step 14) . If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 15) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between brake switch input circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 19) .
- Using DVOM, measure voltage between brakelight switch power supply circuit of brakelight switch fuse and ground. If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to step 22) . If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 20) .
- Repair open in brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Replace all faulty terminals or connectors.
- Replace brakelight switch.
- Adjust brakelight switch. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article.
- Repair short to ground in brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch and EBCM/EBTCM. Replace fuse with a known-good fuse.
- Repair open or short to ground in brakelight switch power supply circuit between fuse and brakelight switch.
- Replace EBCM/EBTCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Malfunction is not currently present. An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. Check for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal-to-wiring connections, or damaged wiring harness.
