DTC C1273: VES Actuator Circuit Open Or Shorted To Ground (ACHIEVA, ALERO, Grand Am, Intrigue & Skylark)

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select MISC TESTS, and then select VES MANUAL CONTROL. Using scan tool, command VES actuator on. If feedback current is greater than 100 milliamps, go to step 14)  . If feedback current is less than 100 milliamps, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect 2-pin VES actuator connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of VES actuator low circuit between VES actuator connector (harness side) and EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 10)  .
  4. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VES actuator low circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 11)  .
  5. Using DVOM, measure resistance of VES actuator high circuit between VES actuator connector (harness side) and EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 12)  .
  6. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VES actuator high circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector (connector C1, terminal B8 on Intrigue, or terminal "C" on all models except Intrigue) and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 13)  .
  7. Reconnect VES actuator connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VES actuator low circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector (connector C1, terminal B7 for Intrigue, or terminal No. 18 on all models except Intrigue) and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 15)  .
  8. Using DVOM, measure resistance between VES actuator high circuit and VES actuator low circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector (connector C1, terminals B7 and B8 on Intrigue, or terminals No. 18 and "C" on all mode except Intrigue). If resistance is 7-19 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 7-19 ohms, go to step 15)  .
  9. Check 2-pin VES actuator connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. Check VES actuator low circuit for damage which could result in short to ground or an open with all connectors connected. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC C1273 sets, go to step 16)  . If DTC C1273 does not set, go to step 14)  .
  10. Repair open or high resistance in VES actuator low circuit between VES actuator and EBCM/EBTCM.
  11. Repair short to ground in VES actuator low circuit between VES actuator and EBCM/EBTCM.
  12. Repair open or high resistance in VES actuator high circuit between VES actuator and EBCM/EBTCM.
  13. Repair short to ground in VES actuator high circuit between VES actuator and EBCM/EBTCM.
  14. Malfunction is not currently present. Possible causes are an open or short to ground in VES actuator circuits or a faulty VES actuator. Ensure all ABS DTCs have been diagnosed and repaired before clearing VES DTCs. ABS DTCs will automatically be cleared and DTC history data lost if VES DTCs are cleared first.

An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. Check for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal-to-wiring connections, or damaged wiring harness.

  15. Replace VES actuator.
  16. Replace EBCM/EBTCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
