DTC C1247: Left Front Abs Motor Free Spins

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1256 is also set as current, go to DTC C1256. If DTC C1256 is not set as current, go to next step.
  3. Pump brake pedal until firm to deplete brake booster vacuum reservoir. Using scan tool, select MISC TESTS, and then select MANUAL CONTROL. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR APPLY, and apply left front ABS motor. Observe left front ABS motor commanded current and left front ABS motor feedback current. If commanded current and feedback current are about 10 amps, go to next step. If commanded current and feedback current are not about 10 amps, go to step 6)  .
  4. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR RELEASE, and release left front ABS motor. Observe left front ABS motor commanded current and left front ABS motor feedback current. Observe brake pedal height while releasing left front ABS motor. If commanded current and feedback current are about 6 amps, and brake pedal fell, go to next step. If commanded current and feedback current are not about 6 amps, and brake pedal did not fall, go to step 6)  .
  5. Maintain firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR APPLY, and then apply left front ABS motor. If brake pedal rises, go to step 22)  . If brake pedal does not rise, go to next step.
  6. Using scan tool, select MISC TESTS. Using scan tool, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS motor pack connector. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance of left front motor high circuit between motor pack connector (harness side) and EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is equal to or less than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 1.5 ohms, go to step 15)  .
  7. Using DVOM, measure resistance of left front motor low circuit between motor pack connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is equal to or less than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 1.5 ohms, go to step 16)  .
  8. Using DVOM, measure resistance between left front motor high circuit and left front motor low circuit of motor pack connector (component side). If resistance is equal to or less than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 1.5 ohms, go to step 17)  .
  9. Remove ABS modulator/motor pack assembly from vehicle. See ABS MODULATOR/MOTOR PACK ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove modulator gear cover. Check for a stripped motor pack left front gear. Motor pack is unit with 3 small gears. Left front gear is furthest forward gear when modulator is installed in vehicle. If motor pack gear is stripped, go to step 17)  . If motor pack gear is not stripped, go to next step.
  10. Check for a stripped modulator left front gear. Modulator is unit with 3 large gears. Left front gear is furthest forward gear when modulator is installed in vehicle. If modulator gear is stripped, go to step 18)  . If modulator gear is not stripped, go to next step.
  11. Reconnect ABS modulator/motor pack assembly connector. Reconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Carefully secure ABS modulator/motor pack assembly into vehicle so gears are observable. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, select MANUAL CONTROL. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR APPLY, and apply left front ABS motor while observing modulator left front gear set. Left front gear is furthest forward gear when modulator is installed in vehicle. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR RELEASE, and release left front ABS motor while observing modulator left front gear set. Using scan tool, select left front ABS MOTOR APPLY, and apply left front ABS motor while observing modulator left front gear set. If modulator left front gear set moves in both directions at least one full revolution, go to next step. If modulator left front gear set does not move in both directions at least one full revolution, go to step 17)  .
  12. Using scan tool, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF. Turn ignition off. Separate modulator from motor pack. Grasp left front modulator gear and attempt to rotate gear. If gear can be rotated 13 full revolutions lock to lock, go to step 19)  . If gear cannot be rotated 13 full revolutions lock to lock, go to next step.
  13. Disconnect ABS motor pack connector. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Check ABS motor pack connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors are faulty, go to step 20)  . If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  14. Reinstall modulator gear cover. Reinstall ABS modulator/motor pack assembly into vehicle. Reconnect ABS modulator/motor pack assembly connector. Reconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Start engine without pressing brake pedal. Allow engine to run for at least 10 seconds. Turn ignition off. Repeat ignition cycle sequence 2 more times. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1247 is set as current, go to step 21)  . If DTC C1247 is not set as current, go to step 22)  .
  15. Repair high resistance in left front motor high circuit between motor pack and EBCM/EBTCM.
  16. Repair high resistance in left front motor low circuit between motor pack and EBCM/EBTCM.
  17. Replace motor pack.
  18. Replace modulator gear.
  19. Replace modulator.
  20. Replace all faulty terminals or connectors.
  21. Replace EBCM/EBTCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  22. Malfunction is not currently present. An intermittent may be caused by a mechanical system component sticking, binding, or slipping. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. If DTC only sets once and DTC C1256 also sets, see DTC C1256. If enhanced diagnostics indicate DTC sets during ABS, see DTC C1256.

After diagnosis is complete, clear DTCs and test drive vehicle for 3 drive cycles to verify DTC does not reset. Drive cycle consists of starting vehicle, driving vehicle faster than 10 MPH, stopping vehicle, and then turning ignition off.
