DTC C1243: VES Steering Wheel Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction (ACHIEVA, ALERO, Grand Am & Skylark)

- Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST and monitor steering wheel sensor voltage while rotating steering wheel from stop to stop. If voltage is 0.4-4.7 volts, go to step 5) . If voltage is not 0.4-4.7 volts, go to next step.
- If voltage is 0.4-4.7 volts, go to step 14) . If voltage is not 0.4-4.7 volts, go to next step.
- If voltage reading varies, go to step 21) . If voltage does not vary, go to step 1) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect steering wheel speed sensor. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connectors. See EBCM/EBTCM LOCATION under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connectors. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 29) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 30) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 31) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 32) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance of sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) between EBCM/EBTCM connector and steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 33) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance of sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) between EBCM/EBTCM connector and steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 34) .
- Check EBCM/EBTCM connectors and steering wheel speed sensor terminals for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors and terminals are faulty, go to step 35) . If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Reconnect EBCM/EBTCM connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If voltage is greater than 4 volts, go to step 41) . If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check wiring circuits for damage which could result in shorts between circuits or shorts to ground. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 42) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, see INTERMITTENTS & POOR CONNECTIONS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect steering wheel speed sensor. Turn ignition on. If scan tool steering wheel speed sensor displayed voltage is 0-1 volt, go to next step. If scan tool steering wheel speed sensor displayed voltage is not 0-1 volt, go to step 16) .
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side) and ground. If resistance is 0-5 ohms, go to step 41) . If resistance to ground is not 0-5 ohms, go to step 18) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If voltage is 0-1 volt, go to step 17) . If voltage is not 0-1 volt, go to step 38) .
- Turn ignition off. Check sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) for damage which could result in short to voltage with all connectors connected. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 42) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, see INTERMITTENTS & POOR CONNECTIONS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connectors. Using DVOM, measure resistance of sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) between EBCM/EBTCM connector and steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 36) .
- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If voltage is 0-1 volt, go to next step. If voltage is not 0-1 volt, go to step 37) .
- Turn ignition off. Check EBCM/EBTCM connectors and steering wheel speed sensor terminals for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage which could result in short to voltage or an open with all connectors connected. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 42) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, see INTERMITTENTS & POOR CONNECTIONS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, backprobe between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If voltage is greater than 4.7 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.7 volts, go to step 23) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect steering wheel speed sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, backprobe between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of steering wheel speed sensor connector (harness side). If voltage reading is greater than 4.7 volts, go to step 27) . If voltage is not 4.7 volts, go to step 41) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Disconnect steering wheel speed sensor connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector. If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 40) .
- Using MIN/MAX function of DVOM, measure resistance between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) of steering wheel speed sensor while rotating steering wheel slowly from stop to stop. If resistance is 390-12,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 390-12,000 ohms, go to step 41) .
- Check sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) for damage which could result in short between circuits with all connectors connected. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on ensuring steering wheel does not rotate. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 42) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, go to next step.
- Rotate steering wheel slowly from stop to stop. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 41) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, see INTERMITTENTS & POOR CONNECTIONS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. If voltage is greater than 1.0 volt, go to step 39) . If voltage is not greater than 1.0 volt, go to step 28) .
- Turn ignition off. Check sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) for damage which could result in short to voltage with all connectors connected. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on. If DTC C1243 sets as current, go to step 42) . If DTC C1243 does not set as current, see INTERMITTENTS & POOR CONNECTIONS under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
- Repair short between sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire).
- Repair short between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire).
- Repair short to ground in sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair short to ground in sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair open or high resistance in sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair open or high resistance in sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Replace all faulty terminals or connectors.
- Repair open or high resistance in sensor ground circuit (Black or Orange/Black wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair short to voltage in sensor ground circuit (Orange/Black wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair short to voltage in sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair short to voltage in sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) between steering wheel speed sensor and EBCM/EBTCM.
- Repair short between sensor 5-volt reference circuit (Gray wire) and sensor input circuit (Light Blue wire).
- Replace steering wheel speed sensor.
- Replace EBCM/EBTCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE/ ELECTRONIC BRAKE & TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBCM/EBTCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
