Testing Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Buick Regal and 1999 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBTCM connector. Connect pinout box and adapter cable to EBTCM harness connector only. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C1. Using DVOM, check resistance between terminal C9 of pinout box and PCM connector C1 terminal No. 71. If resistance measures 0-2 ohms, go to step  4 . If resistance does not measure 0-2 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Repair open or high resistance in circuit No. 463.
  4. Using DVOM, measure resistance between pinout box terminal C9 and terminal D. If resistance is infinite, go to step  6 . If circuit is shorted to ground, go to next step.
  5. Repair circuit No. 463 for short to ground.
  6. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between pinout box terminal C9 and terminal "D". If voltage is present, go to next step. If no voltage is present, go to step 8)  .
  7. Repair circuit No. 463 for short to voltage.
  8. Turn ignition off. Reconnect PCM connector C1 to PCM. Start engine. Using DVOM, measure voltage between pinout box terminal C9 and terminal D. If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.5-5.5 volts, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace EBTCM.
  10. Suspect defective PCM. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If on-board diagnostic system check passes, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . If on-board diagnostic system check does not pass, perform repairs as indicated in self-diagnostics.
