Testing Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Buick Regal and 1999 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage at ABS fuse (60-amp) by probing between fuse test terminal and ground. If voltage is 10.5-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10.5-14 volts, see appropriate diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  3. Measure voltage at ABS fuse (10-amp) by probing between fuse test terminal and ground. If voltage is 10.5-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10.5-14 volts, see appropriate diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBTCM connector. Connect pinout box and adapter cable to EBCM/EBTCM harness connector only. Using DVOM, check resistance between terminal "C" of pinout box and ground. Perform wiggle test while measuring resistance. If resistance measures 0-2 ohms, go to step  6 . If resistance does not measure 0-2 ohms, go to next step.
  5. Repair open or high resistance in circuit No. 251A.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBTCM connector. Connect pinout box and adapter cable to EBCM/EBTCM harness connector only. Using DVOM, check resistance between terminal "D" of pinout box and ground. Perform wiggle test while measuring resistance. If resistance measures 0-2 ohms, go to step  8 . If resistance does not measure 0-2 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Repair open or high resistance in circuit No. 251B.
  8. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage between pinout box terminal A11 and terminal "C". Perform wiggle test while measuring voltage. If voltage measures 10-14 volts, go to step  10 . If voltage does not measure 10-14 volts, go to next step.
  9. Repair open or high resistance in circuit No. 1339.
  10. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage between pinout box terminals "A" and "C". Then check voltage between pinout box terminals "B" and "C". Perform wiggle test while measuring voltages. If voltage measures 10-14 volts, go to step  12 . If voltage does not measure 10-14 volts, go to next step.
  11. Repair open or high resistance in circuits No. 1442A and 1442B.
  12. Turn ignition off. Check EBCM/EBTCM and harness connector for poor terminal contact, damaged terminals and terminal corrosion. Repair as necessary. If no damage if found, go to next step.
  13. Check battery connections for poor terminal contact, damaged terminals and terminal corrosion. Repair as necessary. If no damage if found, go to next step.
  14. Check engine ground connections for poor terminal contact, damaged terminals and terminal corrosion. Repair as necessary. If no damage if found, go to next step.
  15. Reconnect all system components. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select ABS DATA DISPLAY. Select IGNITION VOLTAGE and SWITCHED BATTERY VOLTAGE. Disable ignition circuit, then crank engine. If ignition voltage and switched battery voltage measures 10-14 volts, go to step  17 . If ignition voltage and switched battery voltage do not measure 10-14 volts, go to next step.
  16. Inspect for conditions that may cause an intermittent voltage drop during cranking. Check connections for poor terminal contact, damaged terminals and terminal corrosion. Check battery and engine ground connections. Check junction block connections. Repair as necessary.
  17. Test drive vehicle while monitoring both IGNITION VOLTAGE and SWITCHED BATTERY VOLTAGE in ABS DATA DISPLAY. If ignition voltage and switched battery voltage measures 10-14 volts, go to step  19 . If ignition voltage and switched battery voltage do not measure 10-14 volts, go to next step.
  18. Inspect for conditions that may cause an intermittent voltage drop during cranking. Check connections for poor terminal contact, damaged terminals and terminal corrosion. Check battery and engine ground connections. Check junction block connections. Repair as necessary.
  19. Replace EBCM/EBTCM.
