Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. Go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to DLC and turn ignition on. Select Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) special functions IPC gauges on scan tool. Perform engine coolant gauge sweep test. Engine coolant temperature gauge should go from full cold, to full hot and back to full cold positions smoothly. If engine coolant temperature gauge sweep test is okay, go to POWERTRAIN ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - GASOLINE - EXCEPT METRO, PRIZM & TRACKER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If engine coolant temperature gauge sweep test is not okay, go to next step.
  3. Replace instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
