Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
After completing repairs, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR SYSTEM CHECK
under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Perform BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Select BODY menu on scan tool. Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, and then LAMP TEST on scan tool. Use scan tool to turn on warning indicators. If BRAKE indicator comes on, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator does not come on, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Select CHASSIS menu. Select DATA DISPLAY,and then ABS DATA on scan tool. If data from Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) is received, go to next step. If data from EBTCM is not received, go to appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
- Select BCM portion of BODY function on scan tool. Select DATA DISPLAY on scan tool. If data from BCM is received, go to next step. If data from BCM is not received, repair class 2 serial data communications as necessary. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
- Apply parking brake. If BRAKE indicator comes on, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator does not come on, go to step 10 .
- Disconnect brake fluid reservoir level switch connector. Connect fused jumper between brake fluid reservoir level switch connector terminals. If BRAKE indicator comes on, go to step 13 . If BRAKE indicator does not come on, go to next step.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between brake fluid reservoir level switch connector terminal "A" (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 14 .
- Disconnect EBTCM connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Pink wire between EBTCM connector terminal No. 20 and brake fluid reservoir level switch connector terminal "B". If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 15 .
- Check EBTCM and brake fluid reservoir level switch connectors for poor contact, corroded terminals or damage. If faulty terminal or connector is found, go to step 16 . If terminals and connectors are okay, go to step 17 .
- Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Connect jumper wire between parking brake switch connector and ground. If BRAKE indicator comes on, go to step 18 . If BRAKE indicator does not come on, go to next step.
- Disconnect BCM connector C2. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Light Blue wire between BCM connector C2 terminal A9 and parking brake switch connector. If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 19 .
- Check BCM connectors C1 and C2 for poor contact, corroded terminals or damage. If faulty terminal or connector is found, go to step 16 . If terminals and connectors are okay, go to step 20 .
- Replace brake fluid reservoir level switch.
- Repair open or high resistance in Black wire between brake fluid reservoir level switch and ground.
- Repair open or high resistance in Pink wire between brake fluid reservoir level switch and EBTCM.
- Repair or replace faulty terminals or connectors.
- Replace EBTCM. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
- Replace parking brake switch.
- Repair open or high resistance in Light Blue wire between parking brake switch and BCM.
- Replace BCM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
