Brake Warning Indicator Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After completing repairs, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  1. Perform BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. Go to next step.
  2. If ABS indicator is also on, go to appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES. If ABS indicator is not on, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Select CHASSIS menu. Select DATA DISPLAY, and then ABS DATA on scan tool. Observe BRAKE WARNING LAMP CMD status. If scan tool indicates BRAKE WARNING LAMP CMD status as ON, go to step  8 . If scan tool does not indicate BRAKE WARNING LAMP CMD status as ON, go to next step.
  4. Select BCM on scan tool. Select DATA DISPLAY, and then INPUTS on scan tool. Observe PARK BRAKE SWITCH input. If scan tool indicates PARK BRAKE SWITCH input as ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate PARK BRAKE SWITCH input as ON, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If parking brake is fully released, go to next step. If parking brake is not fully released, go to step  10 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Turn ignition on. If BRAKE indicator turns off, go to step  11 . If BRAKE indicator does not turn off, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM connector C2. Using DVOM, measure resistance between parking brake switch connector terminal "A" (Light Blue wire) and ground. If continuity is not indicated, repair BCM as necessary. Go to appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. If continuity is indicated, go to step  12 .
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Disconnect brake fluid reservoir level switch connector. Turn ignition on. If BRAKE indicator turns off, go to step  13 . If BRAKE indicator does not turn off, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between brake fluid reservoir connector terminal "B" (Pink wire) and ground. If continuity is not indicated, go to step  14 . If continuity is indicated, go to step  15 .
  10. Release parking brake. Check for mechanical binding and repair as necessary.
  11. Replace parking brake switch.
  12. Repair short to ground in Light Blue wire between parking brake switch and BCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  13. Replace brake fluid reservoir level switch.
  14. Replace EBTCM. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  15. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between brake fluid reservoir level switch and EBTCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
