Parking/Emergency Brake
- Adjust parking brake shoes to proper clearance using Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage (J 21177-A). Turn adjusting screw to set parking brake shoes to proper width to match brake drums. See Fig 1.
- Set parking brake to fully seated position. Release parking brake. Repeat 5 times.
- Check parking brake travel for full release.
- Turn ignition ON and verify that parking brake lamp turns off. If lamp is on and brake appears to be released, ensure parking brake is fully released and against its stop.
- If lamp is still on, pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Adjust parking brake by turning nut on equalizer while spinning both rear wheels. Parking brake is adjusted when either wheel starts to drag. Stop adjusting and back off adjuster nut one full turn.
- Apply parking brake to 4 clicks. Rear wheels should not move when rotated by hand in forward direction. Wheels should drag slightly or not move when turned in reverse direction.
- Release parking brake and check for free wheel rotation.
- Lower vehicle when adjustment is complete.
NOTE:
If rear wheels still spin without drag after this procedure, readjust parking brake shoes. See step 1.
