PRNDL Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Put gear selector lever in Park. Using scan tool, read gear selector position display. See Fig 1 . If scan tool displays as specified for Park position, go to next step. If scan tool does not display as specified for Park position, go to step 3).
  2. Compare scan tool display to table for each gear selector position. See Fig 1 . If scan tool displays as specified for all gear selector positions, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation. If scan tool does not display as specified for all gear selector positions, repair open or short to ground in appropriate circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Recheck system operation.
  3. If scan tool does not display high for all inputs, go to next step. If scan tool displays high for all inputs, check for open in circuit No. 451 (Black/White wire) between instrument cluster Orange 32-pin connector C2 and ground. Check for poor terminal contact at Black 66-pin connector C101 (body-to-engine wiring harness, located at right rear of engine compartment, near strut tower), terminal L2 (Black/White wire). Check for malfunctioning park/neutral position switch. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuits, contacts and switch are okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  4. If scan tool displays low for all inputs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display low for all inputs, move gear selector lever from Park to Drive. Repair appropriate circuit associated with input that does not change. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Recheck system operation.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Black 66-pin connector C101 (body-to-engine wiring harness, located at right rear of engine compartment, near strut tower). Turn ignition switch to ON position. If scan tool does not display high for all inputs, go to next step. If scan tool displays high for all inputs, replace park/neutral position switch. Recheck system operation.
  6. Check for short to ground in all gear selector position input circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuits are okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
