WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST, and then select BRAKE SWITCH POSITION. If scan tool indicates brakelight switch circuit is open, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate switch circuit is open, go to step 11).
- Apply light pressure to brake pedal while monitoring BRAKE SWITCH POSITION on scan tool. If scan tool indicates brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to step 9). If scan tool does not indicate brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to next step.
- Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Observe rear brake lights. If rear brake lights are on, go to next step. If rear brake lights are not on, go to step 9).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using DVOM, measure voltage between brake switch input circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAM . If voltage is equal to or greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 7).
- Check EBCM/EBTCM connector and harness connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors are faulty, go to step 8). If connectors are okay, go to step 10).
- Repair open in brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch and EBCM/EBTCM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Replace all faulty terminals or connectors. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Repair open in brakelight switch wiring circuit. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Replace EBCM/EBTCM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Malfunction is not currently present. An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. Check for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal-to-wiring connections, or damaged wiring harness.
