DTC C1292: Open BRAKELIGHT Switch Circuit When Abs Was Required

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. If DTC C1295 is set as current or history, go to DTC C1295. If DTC C1295 is not set as current or history, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST, and then select BRAKE SWITCH POSITION. Apply light pressure to brake pedal while monitoring BRAKE SWITCH POSITION on scan tool. If scan tool indicates brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to step 13). If scan tool does not indicate brakelight switch is on within one inch of brake pedal travel, go to next step.
  4. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Observe rear brake lights. If rear brake lights are on, go to next step. If rear brake lights are not on, go to step 7).
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EBCM connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch and EBCM connector. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . If resistance is 0-2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0-2 ohms, go to step 9).
  6. Check EBCM connector and harness connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. Reconnect all connectors. Test drive vehicle and perform an ABS stop from about 20 MPH. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1291 or C1292 is set as current, go to step 12). If DTCs C1291 and C1292 are not set as current, go to step 13).
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage between brakelight switch power supply circuit of brakelight switch connector C1 and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 11).
  8. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using DVOM, measure voltage between brake switch input circuit of brakelight switch connector C1 and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 10).
  9. Repair open in brake switch input circuit between brakelight switch and EBCM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  10. Adjust or replace brakelight switch. See BRAKE SYSTEM article. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK.
  11. Repair open or short to ground in brakelight switch power supply circuit between fuse and brakelight switch. Check brakelight switch STOP LPS fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  12. Replace EBCM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  13. Malfunction is not currently present. An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. Check for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal-to-wiring connections, or damaged wiring harness.
