DTC C1246: Rear Abs Channel Will Not Move

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Check 6-pin ABS motor pack connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector for proper wire color/connector cavity combination. If wires are properly located in connector cavities, go to next step. If wires are not properly located in connector cavities, go to step 11).
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Pump brake pedal until firm to deplete brake booster vacuum reservoir. Install scan tool. Using scan tool, select MISC TESTS, and then select MANUAL CONTROL. Using scan tool, select ABS MOTOR APPLY of rear ABS channel, and apply rear ABS motor. Wait 5 seconds. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. Using scan tool, select rear ABS MOTOR RELEASE, and then release rear ABS motor. If brake pedal falls, go to next step. If brake pedal does not fall, go to step 5).
  4. Maintain firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, select rear ABS MOTOR RELEASE, and then apply rear ABS motor. If brake pedal rises, go to step 17). If brake pedal does not rise, go to next step.
  5. Remove firm pressure from brake pedal. Using scan tool, select rear ABS MOTOR RELEASE, and then apply rear ABS motor. Observe rear ABS motor commanded current and rear ABS motor feedback current. If feedback current was equal to or less than 8 amps, go to next step. If feedback current was greater than 8 amps, go to step 10).
  6. Using scan tool, exit MANUAL CONTROL. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 6-pin ABS motor pack connector. Disconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between rear motor high circuit and rear motor low circuit of EBCM/EBTCM connector. See WIRING DIAGRAM  . If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, go to step 12).
  7. Using DVOM, measure resistance between rear motor high circuit and rear motor low circuit of motor pack connector (component side). See WIRING DIAGRAM  . If resistance is 0.2 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not 0.2 ohm, go to step 13).
  8. Check 6-pin ABS motor pack connector and EBCM/EBTCM connector for poor terminal contact, corrosion or damage. If connectors are faulty, go to step 15). If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition off. Reconnect EBCM/EBTCM connector. Reconnect ABS modulator/motor pack assembly connector. Start engine without pressing brake pedal. Allow engine to run for at least 10 seconds. Repeat ignition cycle sequence 2 more times. Using scan tool, display DTCs. If DTC C1246 has set within last 3 ignition cycles, go to step 16). If DTC has not set within last 3 ignition cycles, go to step 17).
  10. Using scan tool, select MISC TESTS. Using scan tool, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF. Turn ignition off. Remove ABS modulator/motor pack assembly from vehicle. See ABS MODULATOR/MOTOR PACK ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Separate modulator from motor pack. Grasp rear modulator gear and attempt to rotate gear. Rear gear is middle gear when modulator is installed in vehicle. If gear can be rotated 10 full revolutions lock to lock, go to step 13). If gear cannot be rotated 10 full revolutions lock to lock, go to step 14).
  11. Position proper wires into proper connector cavities. See WIRING DIAGRAM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  12. Repair short between rear motor high circuit and rear motor low circuit. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  13. Replace motor pack. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  14. Replace modulator. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . 15 Replace all faulty terminals or connectors. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  15. Replace EBCM/EBTCM. After repairs, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
  16. Malfunction is not currently present. An intermittent may be caused by a mechanical system component sticking, binding, or slipping. Frequency of malfunction can be determined by using enhanced diagnostic function of scan tool. DTC C1246 may set after ABS modulator disassembly if modulator pistons are positioned at bottom of bore. Check for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal-to-wiring connections, or damaged wiring harness. After diagnosis is complete, clear DTCs and test drive vehicle for 3 drive cycles to verify DTC does not reset. Drive cycle consists of starting vehicle, driving vehicle faster than 10 MPH, stopping vehicle, and then turning ignition off.
