Gauge Inoperative Or Inaccurate

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If fuel gauge does not operate, go to step 6). If fuel gauge always indicates full, go to step 3). If fuel gauge always indicates empty, disconnect fuel gauge sender connector. If fuel gauge indicates full, replace fuel gauge sender.
  2. If fuel gauge still indicates empty, disconnect instrument cluster connector. Connect a test light between instrument cluster connector terminals C4 (Purple wire) and C13 (Pink/Black wire). If test light does not light, replace instrument cluster. If test light lights, repair short to ground in Purple wire.
  3. Disconnect fuel gauge sender connector. Connect a test light between fuel gauge sender connector (harness side) terminal "D" (Black wire) and battery positive post. If test light does not light, check for open in Black wire between ground and fuel gauge sender, or for poor connections at fuel gauge sender. Repair or replace as necessary.
  4. If test light lights, connect a test light between fuel gauge sender connector (harness side) terminal "C" (Purple wire) and ground. If fuel gauge indicates empty, check for poor connections at fuel gauge sender. If connections are okay, replace fuel gauge sender.
  5. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. Also check for open in Purple wire. If connections and Purple wire are okay, replace instrument cluster.
  6. Disconnect fuel gauge sender connector. Connect 2 Red leads of Gauge Tester (J-33431) to fuel gauge sender connector terminal "C" (Purple wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Set resistance dials on tester to zero ohms (Empty).
  7. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. Also check for short to battery voltage in Purple wire. If connections and Purple wire are okay, replace instrument cluster.
  8. If fuel gauge indicates empty, set resistance dials on tester to 90 ohms (Full). If fuel gauge does not indicate full, check for poor connections at instrument cluster and splice connections. Also check for short to ground in Purple wire. If connections and Purple wire are okay, replace instrument cluster.
  9. If fuel gauge does not indicate full, check for poor ground at fuel gauge sender. If fuel gauge sender ground is okay, check for mechanical clearance between float and tank interior. Repair loose, corroded or shorted wires and connections as necessary. If wires and connections are okay, replace fuel gauge sender.
