Coolant Temperature Gauge Test

  1. If coolant temperature gauge does not work, disconnect wire at coolant temperature sender unit. Place ignition switch in "RUN" position. Gauge should read cold.
  2. Ground sender unit wire. Gauge should read hot. If gauge reads both temperatures correctly, gauge and wiring are okay. Replace coolant temperature sender unit.
  3. If gauge did not respond, check wiring from gauge to sender unit and to ground. Repair if necessary. If wiring is okay, replace coolant temperature gauge.
  4. Using Tester (J-33431), connect one lead to Dark/Green wire and remaining lead to ground. Set resistance control to approximately 55 ohms, 100 ohms and 1500 ohms. The gauge should indicate "C", midscale and "H" respectively. If gauge does not read correctly, disconnect tester and check battery voltage at sender wire connector.
  5. If voltage is present, then wiring is okay. Install a new coolant temperature gauge. If gauge does read correctly, install a new coolant temperature sender.
