Alternator Charge Indicator

  1. Ensure battery is fully charged, then proceed with test. If lamp remains on when ignition is off, disconnect 2-cavity connector from alternator. If indicator goes off, repair or replace rectifier bridge in alternator.
  2. If indicator stays on, locate and repair short circuit between Red and Brown wires connected to 2-cavity alternator connector. If lamp remains off when ignition is on but engine is not running, check indicator. If indicator is dim, check fuse. If indicator bulb is burnt out, replace bulb.
  3. If bulb is okay, insert a screwdriver in test hole of alternator to by-pass regulator. See Fig 1 . If indicator comes on, repair or replace regulator (in alternator). If indicator is off, disconnect 2-cavity connector from alternator and jumper Brown wire to ground.
  4. If indicator stays off, check continuity of Brown wires between instrument panel and alternator. If indicator is on, check Brown terminal of connector for proper contact with alternator. If contact is not okay, repair and retest. If contact is okay, repair alternator (check brushes, slip rings and rotor windings for open circuit).
  5. If lamp lights with ignition switch on and engine not running, start engine and observe indicator. If indicator is dim, repair alternator (check for defective diode trio). If indicator is off, charge indicator is okay. If indicator light is on, insert screwdriver into alternator test hole to ground rotor. See Fig 1 .

  6. If indicator is now lit, repair alternator (check brushes, slip rings and rotor windings for open circuit). If indicator is off, check for battery voltage at Red wire of 2-cavity connector. Repair regulator (in alternator).
