Gauge Test (W/Indicators)

If fuel gauge does not work, check gauges fuse. If fuse is okay but gauge shows empty when tank is full, check for short circuit in tank unit circuit.
Disconnect Pink tank unit wire at left rear corner of trunk and turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. If gauge shows full, go to step 5). If fuel gauge shows empty, reconnect tank unit wire and disconnect body connector (with Pink wire) at left hand side of fuse block.
If fuel gauge shows full, check and repair Pink wire between tank unit and fuse block. If fuel gauge shows empty, reconnect body connector at fuse block. Check and repair Pink wire between instrument panel connector and body connector (at fuse block).
If Pink wire is okay, check fuel gauge connections. Also check printed circuit for cracks in foil and loose or corroded connections. If okay, replace fuel gauge.
To check for inaccurate fuel gauge, first ensure battery is fully charged, then disconnect Pink wire from fuel gauge sender. Connect one lead of Tester (BTL-95) to Pink wire leading to body. Connect other lead of tester to a okay chassis ground.
Set tester to empty (ignition switch turned to "RUN" position). Fuel gauge should read empty or below. Set tester to full. Fuel gauge should read full or above. If fuel gauge does not respond to tester setting, replace fuel gauge.
If fuel gauge responds to tester setting, check fuel gauge sender ground. If ground checks okay, remove tank to check both wire and connections. Also check mechanical clearance between front and tank interior. If connections are loose or corroded or wires are shorted, repair as necessary. If wires and connections are okay, replace fuel gauge sender.
If fuel gauge always shows full (or past full), check for open circuit in tank unit circuit. Separate tank unit connector at left rear corner of tank. Connect jumper wire between ground and Pink wire at instrument panel side of tank unit connector. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position.
If fuel gauge shows empty, check and repair Pink wire between tank unit connector and fuel gauge sender. If okay, check fuel gauge sender and replace if necessary. If fuel gauge shows full, reconnect tank unit connector. Separate body connector at left hand side of fuse block.
Connect a jumper wire between ground and Pink wire on instrument panel side of body connector. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. If fuel gauge shows empty, check and repair wire between tank unit connector and body connector.
If fuel gauge shows full, reconnect body connector. Check and repair Pink wire between instrument panel connector and body connector. If Pink wire is okay, check fuel gauge connections. Also check instrument panel printed circuit for cracks in foil and loose or corroded connections. If okay, replace fuel gauge.
