Disc Brakes - Rear (PONTIAC 6000 STE)

Pontiac 6000 STE models are equipped with four wheel disc brakes. The caliper has a single bore and is mounted to a support bracket with 2 mounting bolts. During normal braking, hydraulic force, created by applying force to the brake pedal, is converted by the caliper to friction.

The hydraulic force acts equally against piston and bottom of caliper bore to move piston outward and to move (slide) caliper inward resulting in a clamping action on rotor. This clamping action forces linings against rotor, creating friction to stop vehicle.

When parking brake is applied, lever turns actuator screw which is threaded into a nut in piston assembly. This caused piston to move outward and caliper to slide inward mechanically, forcing linings against rotor. Piston assembly contains a self-adjusting mechanism for parking brake.
