Gauge & Sender/Switch Test

  1. If coolant temperature gauge does not work, disconnect wire (Dark Green/White for Diesel vehicles or Dark Green/Yellow for Gasoline vehicles) at coolant temperature sender/switch unit. Place ignition switch in "Run" position. Gauge should read cold.
  2. Ground sender/switch unit wire. Gauge should read hot. If gauge reads both temperatures correctly, then gauge and wiring are good. Replace coolant temperature sender/switch unit.
  3. If gauge did not respond, check wiring from gauge to sender/switch unit and to ground. Repair if necessary. If wiring is okay, replace coolant temperature gauge.
  4. Using Tester (BT-11-15A or KM J-33431A), set resistance controls to 55 ohms. The gauge should read approximately 260°F (124°C). If gauge does not read correctly, disconnect tester and check battery voltage at terminal "A" (Dark Green/White or Dark Green/- Yellow) of connector.
  5. If voltage is present, then wiring is good. Install a new coolant temperature gauge. If gauge does read correctly, install a new coolant temperature sender.
