Valve Timing Verification

  1. Remove distributor cap. Remove right valve cover. remove No. 4 cylinder intake and exhaust rocker arms and pivot. Disconnect "Bat" wire from HEI distributor. Crank engine until No. 4 cylinder is at TDC or until distributor rotor aligns with No. 4 position on distributor cap.
  2. Measure from pivot boss on cylinder head to top of cylinder No. 4 intake push-rod and record measurement. Slowly turn engine 1-1/2 revolutions until timing mark is at TDC of No. 1 cylinder. Again measure cylinder No. 4 intake push-rod height and record measurement.
  3. If second measurement is not .125" (3.17 mm) more than first measurement, replace timing chain.
