Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove valve covers, rocker arm bolts, pivots, rocker arms and push rods. Note component locations or proper reassembly.
    NOTE: When removing valve covers, DO NOT distort sealing flange.
  2. Remove accessory brackets which interfere. Remove diverter valve, if equipped. Disconnect ground strap. Remove head bolts, head and gasket. Place assembly on wood blocks to prevent gasket surface damage.
  3. If clearance problem is found when removing No. 7 or No. 8 head bolts or push rods, pull components out enough to clear block. Secure with rubber bands. Remove or install with head.
