Incorrect Speedometer Reading

  1. Remove left hand trim cover. Remove heater and A/C control assembly. Plug in Tester (J-33431-A) cruise/speed signal Harness Connector (J-33431-7) to speed sensor connector.
  2. Plug in tester to 110 volt 60 Hz. Set frequency signal to 30 Hz. Set speed signal to 0 MPH. Turn power switch on. Turn ignition on. Cluster should display 0 MPH. Set speed signal to 54 MPH. Cluster should gradually display 54 MPH. If cluster responds as described, go to step 5).
  3. If cluster does not respond as described in step 2), unplug speed sensor connector. Connect the ground lead of digital voltmeter to the center terminal B (Black/White wire) of the speed sensor connector. Connect positive lead to terminal C (Pink/Black wire).
  4. Turn ignition on. Voltmeter should read battery voltage. Voltage at terminal A (Brown wire) of speed sensor connector should read 4.5-5.5 volts. If all voltages are good, replace cluster. If not, repair wiring.
  5. Check speedometer drive and driven gear in transmission to ensure they are correct. Check tire size. If speedometer gears and tires are correct, disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cluster from instrument panel.
    CAUTION: Do not touch any electric component or terminal. Static discharge from your body will cause damage to the electronic components in the cluster.
  6. Ensure speed sensor is bolted to cluster and speedometer cable is hooked up and functional. If speed sensor is secured and cable is good, replace speed sensor.
