Fuel Gauge Incorrect Or Does Not Vary

  1. Check "Gauges" and "CLK-CIG" fuses. If fuses are good, unplug 6 wire connector near fuel tank. Turn ignition on. Using a digital voltmeter, check voltage at the Pink wire in the male half. Voltage should be 11-12 volts.
  2. With ignition still on, connect a digital milli-ammeter from Pink wire to ground. Ammeter should read 45-55 MA. If readings are not as described, go to step 6).
  3. If readings in step 2) are okay, connect rheostat leads from Tester (J-33431-A) between the Pink wire in male half of 6 wire fuel tank connector and ground. Set resistance to 86 ohms. Turn ignition on. Cluster should display full tank. Turn ignition off.
  4. Set resistance to 4 ohms. Turn ignition on. Cluster should display an empty tank and a "LOW" lamp should flash on and off. If resistances are not as specified, replace cluster. If resistances are good, lower fuel tank.
  5. Check for opens or shorts in Pink wire between fuel tank sending unit and 6 wire connector. Ensure ground wire is attached to fuel tank. If wiring is good, replace sending unit in tank.
  6. If readings were not as specified in steps 1) and 2), remove left front speaker cover. Disconnect negative battery cable. Unplug cluster harness connector. Connect battery cable. Turn ignition on. Using a digital voltmeter check voltage at pin R (Pink wire) of harness connector.
  7. Voltmeter should read 0 volts. Voltage at Pink wire of 6 wire connector at fuel tank should also read 0 volts. If voltage is not as specified, repair wiring.
  8. If voltages are as specified in step 7), use an ohmmeter to check for opens or shorts between pin R (Pink wire) of cluster harness connector and Pink wire of 6 wire connector at fuel tank. If wiring is good, replace cluster.
