Occupant Classification System Sensors

WARNING:
- When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors with the Ignition ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing serious injury.
- Before servicing SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery terminals then wait at least 3 minutes.
CAUTION:
- When working with the metal seat frame, use caution to avoid injury from sharp edges.
- When removing or installing the seat trim, handle it carefully to keep dirt out and to avoid damage.
- When removing or installing the seat, use shop cloths to protect components from damage.
- When disconnecting or connecting the harness and harness connectors, handle them carefully to avoid damage.
Removal
- Remove both front slide finishers (LH/RH) from the front passenger seat using the following procedure.
- Slide the front passenger seat to the full rearward position.
- Lift the front of the front slide finisher (LH/RH) up and then pull finisher away from the seat as shown, above.
- Remove both rear slide finishers [(LH/RH) (1)] from the front passenger seat using the following procedure.NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
- Position the front passenger seat using the following procedure.NOTE: Positioning the front passenger seat will allow:
- access to all four seat bolts.
- the seat to be tilted outward in front of the center pillar.
- access to the occupant classification system sensors.
- Disconnect negative and positive battery terminals, then wait at least three minutes. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Remove the four seat bolts.
- Disconnect the seat harness connectors and harness retainers from front passenger seat.
- Remove the front passenger seat from the vehicle.CAUTION: Do not damage the front door finisher or other interior finishers during seat removal.
- Remove the seat cushion outer finisher [(RH) (1)] using the following procedure.
- Release the seat cushion J-hooks from the seat frame assembly.
- Release the seatback board J-clips.
- Remove the slide finisher outer (LH)
- Release the cloth strap (1).
- Release the seat cushion J-clips [(LH/RH) (A)] from the sides of seat frame assembly using suitable tool (B).NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
- Release the seat cushion J-clip (A) from the front of seat frame assembly (1).
- Position the seat cushion trim and pad aside.CAUTION: Do not damage the seat heater harness.NOTE: Do not disconnect the seat heater harness connector.
- Install the front passenger seat using the following procedure.
- Remove the seat frame assembly from the seat tracks (LH/RH) using the following procedure.
- Remove the front occupant classification system sensor using the following procedure.
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown, below.
- Disconnect the front occupant classification system sensor harness connector (A).
- Remove the nuts (B) from the front occupant classification system sensor (1).CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts (B).
- Remove the front occupant classification system sensor (1).
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown, below.
- Remove the rear occupant classification system sensor using the following procedure.
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown, below.
- Disconnect the rear occupant classification system sensor harness connector (A).
- Remove the nuts (B) from the rear occupant classification system sensor (1).CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts (B).
- Remove the rear occupant classification system sensor (1).
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown, below.
Installation
WARNING:
- After installation is complete, perform additional services (Zero point reset) when installing occupant classification system sensors. Refer to Special Repair Requirement .
- Zero point reset must be performed every time the front passenger seat is removed.
- Zero point reset is done after the front passenger seat is installed in vehicle and all nuts and bolts are tightened to specification.
CAUTION:
- After installation is complete, check that no system malfunction is detected causing the air bag warning lamp to illuminate.
- If a malfunction is indicated by the air bag warning lamp after repair or replacement of the malfunctioning parts, perform the SRS final check. Refer to SRS Final Check .
- Install the rear occupant classification system sensor using the following procedure.
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown below and install the rear occupant classification system sensor.
- Install the nuts (B) to the rear occupant classification system sensor (1) and tighten to specification.CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts (B).
Occupant classification system sensor nuts (B)
: 22 N.m (2.2 kg-m, 16 ft-lb)
- Connect the rear occupant classification system sensor harness connector (A).
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown below and install the rear occupant classification system sensor.
- Install the front occupant classification system sensor using the following procedure.
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown below and install the front occupant classification system sensor.
- Install the nuts (B) to the front occupant classification system sensor (1) and tighten to specification.CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts (B).
Occupant classification system sensor nuts (B)
: 22 N.m (2.2 kg-m, 16 ft-lb)
- Connect the front occupant classification system sensor harness connector (A).
- Tilt the front passenger seat towards the front passenger door opening as shown below and install the front occupant classification system sensor.
- Install the front passenger seat frame assembly using the following procedure.
- Install the seat frame assembly onto the four studs.CAUTION: Make sure the seat frame assembly is installed correctly on all four studs.
- Install nuts to the RH side of the seat frame assembly and tighten to specification in the order shown, below.
CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts.
Seat frame assembly nuts
: 45 N.m (4.6 kg-m, 33 ft-lb)
- Install the nuts to the LH side of the seat frame assembly and tighten to specification in the order shown, below.
CAUTION: Do not reuse nuts.
Seat frame assembly nuts
: 45 N.m (4.6 kg-m, 33 ft-lb)
- Install the seat frame assembly onto the four studs.
- Remove the four seat bolts and the front passenger seat from the vehicle.CAUTION: Do not damage the front door finisher or other interior finishers during seat removal.
- Install the seat cushion trim and pad.
- Attach the seat cushion J-clips [(LH/RH) (A)] to the sides of the seat frame assembly using a suitable tool (B).NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
- Attach the seat cushion J-clip (A) to the front of the seat frame assembly (1).
- Install the slide finisher outer (LH).
- Attach the seat cushion J-hooks to the seat frame assembly.
- Attach the cloth strap (1).NOTE: The cloth strap secures the seat harness between seat cushion and seatback.
- Attach the seatback board J-clips.
- Install the seat cushion outer finisher [(RH) (1)] using the following procedure.
- Place the front passenger seat in the vehicle.CAUTION: Do not damage the front door finisher or other interior finishers during seat installation.
- Attach seat harness retainers to the seat frame and connect seat harness connectors.
- Install and tighten the front passenger seat bolts to specification in the order shown, below.
Front Passenger Seat Bolts
: 48 N.m (4.9 kg-m, 35 ft-lb)
- Connect both battery terminals.CAUTION: Connect positive battery terminal first.
- Slide the front passenger seat to the full rearward position and install the front slide finishers (LH/RH).
- Slide the front passenger seat to the full forward position and install the rear slide finishers (LH/RH).
