Fluid Leak Inspection

Before performing Leak Inspection, ensure power steering fluid is full and system is free of air. If necessary perform Refilling and Air Bleeding Hydraulic System. Refer to Refilling and Air Bleeding Hydraulic System .

Check the hydraulic piping lines for improper attachment and for leaks, cracks, damage, loose connections, chafing or deterioration. Repair or replace as necessary.

1. Wipe clean the outside of all power steering components to remove any residual fluid.
2. Run engine until power steering fluid temperature reaches 50 deg. - 80 deg.C (122 deg. - 176 deg.F) in reservoir tank. Keep engine speed at idle.
3. Turn steering wheel completely right-to-left, then left-to-right several times, holding steering wheel at each "lock" position for five seconds.
   CAUTION: Do not hold steering wheel in a locked position for more than five seconds or damage to the power steering oil pump may occur.
4. Stop engine and carefully inspect for fluid leaks at all power steering hose and tube connections and other system components (gear, pump, tank, etc.).
5. If power steering fluid leaks at connections are noticed, repair or replace as necessary.
   CAUTION:

   • Do not over tighten banjo bolts or connectors as this can damage copper washers and connectors.
   • Do not reuse copper washers.
6. If a power steering system component is repaired or replaced, perform Refilling and Air Bleeding Hydraulic System. Refer to Refilling and Air Bleeding Hydraulic System , then recheck for leaks.
