Disassembly and Assembly: Disassembly

CAUTION:
  • Do not clamp propeller shaft tube in a vise.
  • Clamping propeller shaft tube in a vise could dent or deform the tube causing an imbalance or unsafe condition.
  • Always clamp on one of the yokes and support horizontally.
  • Avoid damaging the slip yoke sealing surface, nicks may damage the bushing or cut the lip seal

Journal (Snap ring type) 

  1. Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  2. Put matching marks on the propeller shaft tube and flange yoke, slip yoke or sleeve yoke as shown.

    CAUTION: For matching marks use paint. Do not damage the rear propeller shaft or flange yoke, slip yoke or sleeve yoke.
  3. Tap the yoke (1) lightly using suitable tool (A) in order to relieve pressure from the snap rings.

  4. Remove the snap rings.

  5. Support propeller shaft so that the propeller shaft is level in a press.
  6. Position suitable tool (B) under journal bearing and press journal to remove journal bearing, using press and suitable tool (A).

  7. Remove the journal bearing at the opposite side, with the above operation.
  8. Remove yoke (1) from propeller shaft (2).

Journal (Nylon injected type) 

  1. Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  2. Put matching marks on the rear propeller shaft tube and flange yoke, slip yoke or sleeve yoke as shown.

  3. Support propeller shaft so that the propeller shaft is level in a press.
  4. Position suitable tool (B) under journal bearing and press journal to remove journal bearing, using press and suitable tool (A).

  5. Remove the journal bearing at the opposite side, with the above operation.
  6. Remove yoke (1) from propeller shaft (2).

Yoke 

  1. Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  2. Remove the snap rings (if equipped).
  3. Support yoke so that it is level in a press.
  4. Position suitable tool (B) under journal bearing and press journal to remove journal bearing, using press and suitable tool (A).

  5. Remove the journal bearing at the opposite side, with the above operation.

Center Support Bearing 

  1. Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Removal and Installation .
  2. Put matching marks on the propeller shaft tube and the slip yoke.
    CAUTION: For matching marks, use paint. Do not damage the propeller shaft tube or slip yoke.
  3. Remove and discard the clamp near the center support bearing, then slide the slip yoke off of propeller shaft tube.
  4. Press the center support bearing off the propeller shaft tube using suitable tool and suitable hydraulic press.
