Removal and Installation: Installation

- Fill the oil pump (1) with clean engine oil through opening (A).
Use recommended engine oil or equivalent. Refer to Cummins (5.0L V8D) Engine: Fluids and Lubricants
CAUTION: To avoid possible engine damage:- Fill the oil pump with oil.
- Prime the lubricating oil system after engine repair or rebuild service activities.
- Confirm oil pressure within 15 seconds of start up, shut down engine immediately if no oil pressure is produced after 15 seconds.
: Front
- Install the oil pump onto the block stiffening plate and hand tighten the bolts.NOTE: Turn the pump to check for proper rotation using a suitable tool.
- Tighten the oil pump bolts in the order shown.
Oil pump bolts
: 20 N.m (2.0 kg-m, 15 ft-lb)
- Install the oil pump sprocket (1) and oil pump chain (2).
- Install bolt (A) and tighten hand-tight.
- Install the oil pump chain tension guide (3) and tighten bolts (B).
- Install the oil pump slack guide (4) and tighten bolt (C) then install the spring (D).
- Hold the oil pump sprocket (1) with a suitable tool and tighten.
Bolts (B)
: 7.4 N.m (0.75 kg-m, 65 in-lb)
Bolt (C)
: 7.4 N.m (0.75 kg-m, 65 in-lb)
Bolt (A)
: 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17 ft-lb)
- Install the front cover. Refer to Removal and Installation .
- Connect the battery or batteries. Refer to Battery Disconnect .
- Operate the engine and check for leaks.CAUTION: To avoid possible engine damage:
- Fill the oil pump with oil.
- Prime the lubricating oil system after engine repair or rebuild service activities.
- Confirm oil pressure within 15 seconds of start up, shut down engine immediately if no oil pressure is produced after 15 seconds.
