Removal and Installation: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Nissan Titan XD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
- Make sure that the cylinder 1 piston is at top dead center before installing the cylinder heads (bank 1) and (bank 2).
- Be sure the cylinder head bolt holes are free of fluids before installing the cylinder heads (bank 1) and (bank 2).
- Clean the surfaces of the cylinder head and cylinder block.
- Install the cylinder head gasket (1) onto the cylinder block (2).CAUTION: Do not reuse the cylinder head gasket.NOTE: Bank 2 shown, Bank 1 similar.
- Clean the surfaces indicated with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free towel and allow time to dry. Prepare surfaces with a Bonderite M-NT 5700 or equivalent wipe and allow surfaces to dry.
- Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) diameter drop of Loctite 5900 RTV or equivalent sealant to the top of the cylinder head gaskets as shown.NOTE: The cylinder heads must be installed within 5 minutes of applying sealant. Final torque must be completed within 30 minutes of the application of sealant.
- Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) diameter drop of Loctite 5900 RTV or equivalent sealant to the top of the cylinder head gaskets as shown.
- Install Tool (A) into the cylinder block (2) and tighten until Tool is fully seated.NOTE:
- Tool should be installed in the front and rear upper cylinder head bolt locations.
- Bank 2 shown, Bank 1 similar.
Tool (A)
: - (J-54410)
(1)
: Cylinder head
- Carefully place the cylinder head on the cylinder block and seat the head onto the dowels and remove the Tool (A).
Tool (A)
: - (J-54410)
- Install and tighten the bolts (A) by hand.CAUTION: Do not reuse cylinder head bolts.NOTE: Bank 2 shown, Bank 1 similar.
- Tighten the bank 1 cylinder head (1) or bank 2 cylinder head (2) bolts in three steps in the sequence shown to the specified torque.
Step 1
: 40 N.m (30 ft-lb)
Step 2
: 120 N.m (89 ft-lb)
Step 3
: Tighten 180 degrees
: Front
- Tighten the bolts (A) to the specified torque.
Bolts (A)
: 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17 ft-lb)
: Front
- Install the rocker arms (2) and hydraulic lash adjusters (1).NOTE:
- Bank 2 shown, Bank 1 similar.
: Front
- Install the intake camshaft (1) first with the camshaft flats (A) facing upward in plane with the valve cover sealing surface.NOTE: The valve springs will prevent the flats from being perfectly horizontal, this is acceptable. The camshaft orientation should be approximately the same as when it was removed.
- Install the camshaft caps (1) and hand tighten the bolts (A).NOTE: The camshaft caps are labeled with their position and have an arrow that points toward the front.
: Front
- Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to the specified torque.NOTE: Make sure the rockers arms have seated correctly.
Camshaft cap bolts
: 11 N.m (1.1 kg-m, 8 ft-lb)
: Front
- Install the exhaust camshaft (1). While holding the exhaust camshaft, engage the camshaft gears so that the timing marks (A) will align once the camshaft is placed in the camshaft towers. Carefully roll the exhaust camshaft in place while maintaining gear contact.
- Install the camshaft caps (1) and hand tighten the bolts (A).NOTE: The camshaft caps are labeled with their position and have an arrow that points toward the front.
: Front
- Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to the specified torque.
Camshaft cap bolts
: 11 N.m (1.1 kg-m, 8 ft-lb)
- Measure camshaft end clearance (A) on each camshaft.
Camshaft end play
: Refer to CAMSHAFT .
- Measure gear backlash (A) on each camshaft gear.
Camshaft gear backlash
: Refer to CAMSHAFT .
NOTE: Gear backlash should be measured with the camshaft sprocket torqued to the camshaft. This will allow the intake camshaft to be held in place while backlash is measured on the exhaust camshaft gear. - Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.NOTE: Operate the engine and check for leaks.
