Symptom Troubleshooting Index

NOTE: Most problems in the SH-AWD unit can be diagnosed by identifying noises from the gears or bearings. Care should be taken during diagnosis not to confuse differential noises with those from other drivetrain components.
Symptom Diagnostic Procedure Also check for
The SH-AWD indicator does not go off, and no DTCs are stored Symptom troubleshooting (see THE SH-AWD INDICATOR DOES NOT GO OFF, AND NO DTCS ARE STORED  ). Low battery voltage

Gear or bearing noises
  • Fluid level too low.
  • Incorrect or worn out fluid.
  • Damaged or chipped gears.
  • Side case clearance incorrect.
  • Incorrect tire size (rolling circumference).
  • Add fluid
  • Drain and fill the differential
  • Replace the differential carrier assembly
  • Side case clearance adjustment
Rear differential overheats
  • Fluid level too low.
  • Incorrect fluid type.
  • Add fluid
  • Drain and fill the differential
Rear differential leaks fluid
  • Fluid level too high.
  • Clogged breather hose.
  • Worn or damaged oil seal.
  • Damaged sealing washer.
  • Loose mounting bolts or inadequate sealing.
  • Lower to proper level
  • Clean or replace
  • Replace the oil seal
  • Replace the sealing washer
  • Recheck torque or apply sealant
Rear differential screeches, whines, moans, or squeaks
  • Fluid level too low.
  • Incorrect or worn out fluid.
  • Incorrect tire rolling circumference.
  • Damaged oil pump.
  • Add fluid
  • Drain and fill the differential
  • Adjust tire pressure or replace tires
  • Replace the differential carrier assembly
Noise during acceleration, or when accelerating from a full stop
  • Incorrect side case clearance.
  • Incorrect pre-load.
  • Incorrect backlash of hypoid gear.
  • Damaged or chipped gears.
  • Incorrect tire size (rolling circumference).
  • Pre-load adjustment
  • Side case clearance adjustment
  • Replace the differential carrier assembly
